SOUTHWEST Louisiana Credit Union was chartered in September of 1952 as a state chartered credit union in Louisiana. We started out as one employer group helping fellow employees with their financial needs. This served our purpose until the early ‘80s when our one employer base started reducing staff. This action effected our credit union drastically, and in the late ‘80s we started helping other credit unions and small employee groups. Merging with other credit unions and taking in more companies gave the credit union the diversity and strength needed to grow and offer more services to it's members. Also merging with other credit unions helped other people by not allowing their credit union to dismantle , and it also helped our original members/owners by enabling us to better afford to offer more than the basic services .
As always the cornerstone of our philosophy is "People helping people". To accomplish our purpose, SWLACU operates on the basis of these objectives:
1. Encourage thrift among the members, thus creating a pool of lendable funds.
2. Make member-loans at reasonable rates of interest.
3. Pay a fair rate of return on member-savings.
4. Provide helpful member financial services.
